Types of tradie insurance
Public liability insurance
Public liability is the cover most tradies are asked about first. It can respond if someone is injured, or their property is damaged, because of your work. Many builders, property managers and commercial clients won't let you on site without a current certificate of currency. Read more on our public liability insurance page.
Tools and portable equipment
Your tools are your income. Tool cover (often called portable equipment or general property cover) can protect tools and equipment against theft and damage, including from your ute, van or job site, depending on the policy terms. Check how the policy treats theft from an unattended vehicle, as conditions vary between insurers.
Commercial motor vehicle insurance
Utes, vans and trucks used for work should be insured for business use, including fitted racking and toolboxes where available. For larger fleets, see our transport and logistics page.
Personal accident and illness
Personal accident and illness insurance can pay a weekly benefit if you can't work because of an injury or illness, subject to the policy terms and waiting periods.
Contract works insurance
If you build, renovate or carry out structural work, contract works insurance can cover the works themselves while they're under construction. See our page on contract works insurance in Melbourne.
Other covers to consider
Depending on your business, you might also need professional indemnity (for trades that give design advice or certify work), management liability, business premises cover for a workshop or yard, or business interruption cover. Our business insurance page covers these in more detail.
Why tradies use a broker
Buying online is quick, but it's easy to pick the wrong occupation or limit. When you work with us, we:
- Ask the right questions about your trade, turnover, subcontractors and the type of sites you work on
- Check what your head contracts or clients require, such as minimum liability limits or interested party notations
- Compare options across insurers rather than offering a single product
- Issue certificates of currency when you need them for a new job
- Help you through the claims process if something goes wrong (see our claims page)
- Review your cover each year as your business grows
Serving tradies Australia-wide
We work with tradies in every state and territory, from Melbourne and Sydney to regional towns. Everything is done by phone and email, so wherever you're based, getting cover is easy.

Is public liability insurance compulsory for tradies?
It isn't compulsory for every trade under general law, but many licensing bodies, builders, councils, property managers and commercial clients require it before you start work. In practice, most tradies need it to win work. We can help you check what your contracts and licence require.
How much public liability cover do I need?
That depends on your trade and the contracts you work under. Many head contractors and commercial sites specify a minimum limit in their contract. We'll check your requirements and suggest a limit that meets them.
Are my tools covered if they're stolen from my ute overnight?
It depends on the policy. Some insurers cover theft from a locked vehicle with visible signs of forced entry; others have conditions about where the vehicle is parked or require tools to be in a locked toolbox. We'll explain the conditions before you buy.
Can you get me a certificate of currency quickly?
Yes. Once your policy is in place, we can issue a certificate of currency for new jobs or head contractors, including any interested party notations your contract requires.
Do you only insure tradies in Melbourne?
No. We insure tradies Australia-wide. Our clients deal with us by phone and email, wherever they're based.
